The day arrived this Saturday, one year after I decided that CH and I would dress up as Ellie and Joel from The Last of Us, a phenomenal and heart-rending game from Naughty Dog. San Diego ComicCon! Saturday morning we donned our costumes, got a little makeup from my wife, and made ourselves look like we’d been living out on the trail. CH made a brick out of floral arrangement foam, painted it up, and I armed myself with a bottle. We’re ready to fight off some clickers!
My wife did a fantastic job with the makeup, making me look even older and scruffier than I do now. She even gave CH a little scar through her right eyebrow, just like Ellie.
We were suitably scuffed up that at the trolley station on the way to ComicCon, someone asked if we’d been camping. Maybe camping out in the sewers, my man, in the burned-out shell of a city that fell twenty years ago to hordes of zombies infected with cordyceps, living like rats with a will to SURVIVE! But I just told him we were going to ComicCon. I don’t think he was ready to hear about brain-controlling fungus. For now let’s just look at the costumes and tomorrow we’ll find out what happened at the ‘con, how many pictures were taken of us, my fan sightings, and our encounter with a real clicker.
I think this is my favorite picture of us, one that captures the fierce and no-limits protection instinct of Joel toward Ellie and her strength and determination. We make a great pair of survivors. Look for the light.
Looking good boy (and girl :)!
