Food, Glorious Food

I picked up our CSA box yesterday at the farmer’s market.  It feels like an inside deal, a members only benefit.  My weekly box comes in an unmarked plastic tub.  I couldn’t wait to peek inside.

Here is the full spread.  I tested one strawberry for quality control.  Result:  delicious.

It includes blood oranges, apples, strawberries, spring salad mix, broccoli rapini, some beautiful radishes, and purple carrots.  Last night we tried to find a recipe for beets, thinking the carrots were mini beets.  Thank goodness they aren’t, since we aren’t big fans (although I did find a recipe for a beet and goat cheese gratin that looked pretty tasty).  I’ve already had the blood oranges, which are really delicious.  There’s something to be said for items picked when they are more ripe, as opposed to items picked green then container shipped halfway around the world.

The CSA for meat starts next month, and I’m excited to see how that turns out.  For the record, this CSA runs about $120/month, which includes 1 delivery a week.  It will get us much better fruit, and certainly the salad mix is much nicer than boring romaine lettuce.  At the end of this month I’ll do some accounting and see how our grocery budget fares.

My baking plans are up in the air for this weekend, but since it’s going to be cool and rainy, maybe I’ll make some sweet little noms for afternoon tea.  Scones?  Soda bread?  Banana bread?
