Never Enough

Once you become a parent, you measure yourself only by your shortcomings and mistakes.  Odd, since I don’t do that in my professional life, but personally as a father I can only see the things that I do poorly.  And I understand why:  whatever you can do for your child will never feel like enough.  My daughter is truly a better person than I—more forgiving, more honest.  All that she gives me helps me understand that while all that I do feels like never enough for me, it is the world to her.  This morning at breakfast she was quiet, as we both usually are.  Then she takes my hand, squeezes it tight to her chest and neck and says, “I love you Babbo.”  I can never do enough to live up to that, but I try every day.
